Ruth received a B.A. degree from Smith College in Northampton, MA where she
majored in English Literature and minored in Art.
When a child she loved to draw and paint. Annual visits to her grandmother
who lived outside of Boston provided the opportunity to go with a friend by
train to the Boston Museum of Art where they wandered about and she copied
pictures and drew from statues. She wanted to be an artist. Her first year
at Connecticut College for Women was a great disillusionment. She enrolled
in a double load of art courses only to find that representational painting
was out of style. However, after a life filled with marriage, children and
a multitude of activities the time arrived when she was free to paint.
Studying the paintings of many artists has been an important part of her art
education. Workshops with Tony Couch, Tony VanHasselt, Charles Reid, Charles
Gruppe, Cluny Maher, Robert Wade and Alvaro Castagnet have been important
learning experiences. Her favorite painters are Vermeer, Winslow Homer, and
Mary Cassatt.
Ruth has had two one-man gallery shows and been in several group shows, Her
paintings were exhibited in the former Moorings Gallery and can now be found
at the Black Duck Gallery and the Lunenburg Art Gallery. Her paintings hang
in private collections in the United States, Holland, Germany, Canada and
Australia.
