Born in Leeds, England, Carol Morrison immigrated to Halifax, Nova Scotia,
to work as a research scientist with the Department of Fisheries and Oceans.
She obtained a Ph.D. at Dalhousie University. Her fulfilling career in
the sciences continues on a consultant basis, presently with a transplant
unit at the IWK Health Centre. She has had a lifelong passion for painting,
culminating in the recent completion of her BFA degree at NSCAD. Her interest
in investigating the natural world around her, which led her to a career
as a biologist, has also led to paintings of landscape, still life and
portraits. She is most influenced by the vibrant colors and expressive
yet delicate brushwork of Tom Thomson and the Group of Seven, and uses
similar techniques to express her interaction with nature.
Apart from solo exhibitions at the Anna Leonowens, Craig and VANS Corridor
Galleries, she has taken part in several group exhibitions. Her paintings
can be seen in the Secord Gallery Hall of Frame and in the Art Sales and
Rental Gallery in Halifax and at http://vans.ednet.ca. The NS Art Bank
bought a portrait of a fellow researcher last year, and "The Magical
Gas Station" this year. A painting of the technologists she came
to know is installed at the IWK Health Centre. Her work is in galleries
across Nova Scotia and in numerous private collections. Last year she
received an award for an emerging artist from the Elizabeth Greenshields
Foundation.
